Connecting Hearts and Minds

Most organisations today focus on aligning their people with the company goals and  vision.  But how many organisations consider the employees personal goals and vision?

In a recent interview with Jack Crumlin, founding Director of Norton-Crumlin and Associates, I was reminded of the value to the individual and the organisation of connecting employees to the organisation through their personal goals.

Jack shared his experience of doing just that as CEO of a telecommunications company. Every single employee had the experience of going through a workshop to uncover and share their personal goals using the CCS.  The employees then displayed their goal cards on their desk.  What happened next was quite significant.

From the perspective of CEO, Jack was now able to connect with people in a meaningful way, he saw the trust and communication between employees rise, and as an organisation they were now able to support individual goals with meaningful rewards.  For example, they noticed that many employees were working toward buying their first home – so experts in the home buying business were brought in to talk with the employees.

What was so impactful was the employee engagement that emerged. ‘Not by paying them more money… but by aligning what they were doing in their personal lives and what they were doing in their day jobs.’

Jack found that people wanted to work there, they stayed longer and put in more discretionary effort. What organisation wouldn’t want that?
