CCS, Critical Reflection and Online Learning
Craig Browne
THE need for reflection as part of a learning process is well accepted. In the reflective stage of learning, the learner recalls, recreates and evaluates their experience. They then look for known rules and concepts that can be linked and applied and experimented with, as a way to modify or improve subsequent similar experiences.
Reflection can also give the learner an opportunity to determine whether what they have learned, and hold to be true, is still justified in their present circumstances [adapted from Jack Mezirow, 1990]. If they determine that their current understanding is no longer justified, the reflection may be enough to motivate a shift in perspective and behaviour.
Critical reflection should also be a vital component in online learning programs. We need to provide ways for online learners to have deep reflective moments even when content is delivered online.
The CCS is a superlative tool for self-discovery and critical reflection. It has a unique capacity for helping individuals reflect, uncover and record tacit thoughts and ideas. We have begun to utilise this capacity to deliver online courses in a manner we call, CCS-enhanced online learning.
CCS-enhanced online learning

The CCS can enrich the learner’s critical reflection experiences by helping them to more accurately and holistically recall and recreate their lived experiences including feelings and emotions.
CCS cards provide the learner with self-selected representations that they link to all the associated concepts, feelings, words and actions that were part of their lived experience.
Then, armed with this clearer picture, they are better able to reflect upon their action – to examine the elements of an experience, to learn from it and to use this understanding to improve their behaviour.
So, when we combine this capacity with some online video instruction and downloadable documents, we get CCS-enhanced online courses. The video facilitator frames the activity and provides guidance and encouragement for the learner who then completes a CCS activity with their vision pack, stickers and downloaded templates. We call it, CCS-enhanced online learning.
The BIG Picture
6 steps to focus your future

And here is our first CCS-enhanced online course:
The BIG Picture – 6 steps to focus your future.
The Big Picture is a self-management program that guides you through a simple yet profound personal vision creation process. Even carrying out one of the six steps can give you focus and life changing ideas. You can enjoy the course steps in your own time and at your own pace, although we recommend one step (which takes about an hour) each week for six weeks. You view online videos, download documentation and activity templates and use CCS vision packs and vision stickers to uncover thoughts and ideas and carry out critical reflection.
So, when you are ready for some serious critical reflection and a unique way to focus your future, I invite you to take a quick preview of the course.
